Free Kids

In louvs reading Last Child In The Woods, he talks about how the lack of outdoor activities can link to problems with ADD and ADHD. I agree with Louvs argument, seeing how nowadays one of the biggest problems with children is their extreme hyperactivity. Most of these kids aren’t used to being outdoors or spending much time outside in nature and playing with other children their age. I would argue that technology definitely has a major part of why this is.
As a child growing up I had many friends, mostly because my mother made friends with other parents who had children my age. I remember that all I ever wanted to do was to spend time outside, running around playing tag and other games with other children. I grew up in New York City so its safe to say that there wasn’t much nature around. However we would still find trees to climb and parks to play in and kids to play with. We would find any excuse to not be indoors. Also there wasn’t much technology for us to be distracted by. Back when I was growing up, if we started getting fussy or overly hyper at home, our parents would kick us out of the house to go burn some energy with our friends. They didn’t try to solve the problem with medication. Our medication was the outdoors.

A land I Wish I Remembered

I couldn’t help but feel some jealousy reading A Land Remembered. In this book there are many detailed descriptions of the natural beauty of Florida from hundreds of years ago. I would give anything to spend a day in this uninhabited, wildly beautiful environment. In part one of this book it seems like Tobias and his family are having a tough time trying to survive in Florida’s wilderness. Tobias and Zech run into a few Florida species that are no longer existent. The one species that they ran into which made me extremely jealous was the Carolina Parakeet. As a bird lover is saddens me to know that these beautiful birds were once hunted to extinction. People back then hunted this small bird for its colorful feathers, just to wear them as an accessory. Some other birds in Florida where also almost hunted to extinction for the same exact reason. If only some people had some compassion for these wild animals at some point, many of them will still be in our very own backyard. Reading this book also made me appreciate Florida much more; now knowing how much wilderness and different animals once ruled this state.

The Everglades

This majestic area of land is like no other. Hundreds of beautiful and unique species live in this vast area unique to Florida. This “River of Grass” used to get most of its water source from Lake Okeechobee and Florida’s torrential rainfall. Along with the growing of Florida’s population came the destruction of this precious water source. A dyke was built around the great lake in order to protect the people living around that area. This restricted the water to flow to the Everglades, and it was now left to only depend on the rainfall. This outcome greatly affected many species living in the Everglades, and also affected our water quality in many other rivers in Florida. There is still hope however, to help this area receive the water flow it is meant to thrive off. The Everglades Restoration Plan will be a great help to this beautiful area. This will help get the natural source of water running through this area similar to how it once used to. It will make me really happy to see such a plan be achieved and have our own national treasure restored and made whole once again. I have never been to this wonderful place, only read about and saw in movies the wonders that inhabit this place. I would love to one day go and see The Everglades for myself and experience that environment.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

The corkscrew swamp sanctuary was a remarkable place. This sanctuary is filled with many of Florida’s native species. It was such a breathtaking experience being in one of Florida’s few old growth forests left. Some of the cypress trees we saw were truly majestic aging over hundreds of years. Knowing that the majority of these old growth forests are now gone truly saddens me. I believe that we need more sanctuaries like these in order to protect and conserve most of these beautiful habitats and the animals living in them. I also think that more people should experience walking through these forests and experiencing first hand this natural beauty. This will help more people sympathize a little more with nature and the beauty it has to offer. Walking through this preserve really had me wondering what Florida looked like before the effects of human civilization. All of the beautiful species that once roamed this land. Some are now gone forever, and others are at risk of being gone forever. With more preserves like the Corkscrew Sanctuary we can really give a lot more species a better chance for survival by giving them a safe place to live.

My Environmental Philosophy

When it comes to my environmental philosophy I am somewhat anthropocentric. I believe that as humans and visitors on this planet, we should do everything in our power to care for it and protect it. Many people take advantage of our planet because they think that everything our world provides is infinite. This type of thinking is truly destroying our planet. Even though some may believe that our resources are extremely abundant, we should still use them in a sustainable manner. We are slowly but surely depleting our home and eventually there will be nothing left, and our planet will be sick and overwhelmingly polluted. I may think that it is our natural duty to prevent these things from happening but many don’t. This is why I think that the government should definitely step in much more than they have in the past. Government policies and laws should be enacted in favor of our environment. This will prevent many industries from dumbing toxins into our water, and lumber companies from cutting down excessive amounts of trees. Also I believe that more schools should educate our youth on our environmental issues, and teach them that they are our future and the future of our planet.
